Pros and Cons of a Wedding Website

Pros and Cons of a Wedding Website

He popped the question; she said yes; now what? The answer to that question is far from simple; it just breeds more questions.

Where should we get married? Who should we invite (and not invite)? What about the food, should we have a sit-down dinner or passed hor d’oeuvres? Don’t even get us started on the dress.

One of the more recent questions brides are asking themselves is, do I need a wedding website? While we at Adagio Djay Entertainment can’t answer that question for you, we can give you some advice and some great and unique wedding website ideas.

Why You Should Have a Wedding Website

Let’s face it; we live in the age of social media. These days, it almost seems that if something doesn’t have an online presence, it doesn’t exist.

Whether or not you agree with that sentiment, it is hard to deny. It is hard to plan a modern wedding without a wedding website.

Here’s why:

1. Save a tree (and some money on printing costs)

You will be surprised by how expensive printed invitations can be. Even save the dates can be a little costly. Save yourself time and money by skipping one or both.

Send electronic save the dates or invitations and have your guest RSVP on your wedding website. It’s not the traditional way, but more and more brides are opting for this more straightforward, and more eco-friendly option.

Even if budget is not a concern, the environmentally-friendly reasons for skipping either save-the-dates or formal invitations might be tempting to you. We all need to do our part, and thankfully, one of the features of a well-designed wedding website is that it allows you to do yours.

2. Easy access to your wedding registry

Talk about saving paper; those wedding registry lists can end up being 20 pages or more. On top of that, they can be challenging to keep track of. The more places you register at, the more lists you have to compile and cross-check.

Wedding websites often allow you to link all your registry lists. That way, you have them all in one place. Your invitees will also be better able to access them when it is time to shop!

3. More flexibility

Need to change a detail about your wedding? In the days before wedding websites, you had to have an amendment to your invite printed out. After that, you would have the added expense of mailing them out again.

Then, if you wanted to be thorough, you would have to wait for confirmation from all your guests that they received the new information. What a headache!

With wedding websites, those days are long gone. Direct all your guests to your site. All changes and additions will be there, and your guests can have up-to-date information.

4. Stay in constant contact

This point is a continuation of our third point of more flexibility. Your wedding website will become your one-stop-shop when it comes to communication with your guests.

Keep track of RSVPs, update and check your wedding registry, make your guests aware of any needed changes and adjustments, or inform your guests of the pertinent stages of wedding planning.

5. Interactivity

To bring all the previous points together, the main reason you will want a wedding website is an ability you will have to interact with your guests in a meaningful way in the days leading up to your wedding.

Beyond you interacting with your guests, your wedding website will allow your guests to communicate with you and each other. Encourage your guests to share their excitement about your upcoming wedding.

Make your wedding website a place to exchange ideas and tips. Create a forum and encourage everyone to add to it. Before long, you will have a bustling center of fun and helpful tips and tricks to peruse at your leisure.

Another fantastic use for your wedding website: song suggestions. You can add an option for your guests to submit song recommendations. The benefit is you get to approve and streamline the list before passing if off to your DJ. Your DJ will get to know what your guests like musically when preparing your song list.

You know, with all that free time you will have leading up to the big day…

Why You Might Not Need a Wedding Website

Even with all the excellent reasons we listed for you above, you might not be convinced. Well, if that’s the case, then let’s go over some reasons you might not need a wedding website.

1. You are traditional

Online platforms tend to be more casual than more traditional modes of communication. Many brides will inevitably use their wedding websites like they use social media.

It can be hard to maintain a level of sophistication and grace online; especially when you are trying to bridge the gap between generations while marrying technology and social media.

You may find it challenging to communicate your views and express your personal style while following the long-established rules for wedding correspondence.

If you are unfamiliar with these rules, check out this list.

2. The tendency to overshare

To follow the first point, you may find yourself tempted to use your wedding website as an extension of your Instagram or Snapchat feed. Avoid the tendency to overshare and stick to only the essential and relevant information

Don’t tell your guests what to wear or even how to act. You may want to, but you can’t control what your guests do or wear at your wedding. If you try, you may have to deal with bruised egos and raised tempers.

Avoid the inclination to share novel-length stories about you, your fiance, or even your wedding. Remember that most people you invite to your wedding know one or both of you very well. Share some memorable anecdotes about your courtship and engagement, but try to keep it short and sweet.

3. Another thing for your to-do list.

A wedding website can be fantastic, if you feel comfortable building and maintaining it yourself. It can take time and effort to complete one, and it might be something you outsource which is an added cost.

If you are not technically savvy, you might not want to deal with the hassle it will bring you. Consider the financial and time commitment for you personally before starting a website.

As you can see, there are many reasons you may want a wedding website. There are also a few reasons you may not. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference. A wedding website can be a valuable tool is used correctly, but it is by no means necessary to a successful wedding.
